JLab Calling Instructions

Please see instructions below for making internal, local, and conference calls from a Jefferson Lab (JLab) telephone.  To obtain an authorization code for making long distance calls, see our Authorization Codes section below.  If you have any problems with any of these types of calls, please contact the CST Division Help Desk.

Internal Call:

Dial the 4 digit extension.  You may find extensions for JLab staff and users with the Staff Search Utility.

Local Call (within the 757 area code):

Dial 9 for an outside line and the 10 digit telephone number.  For example, the dialing sequence for calling a local number is 9 + 757 or 804 + ### + ####.

Domestic Long Distance Call:

Dial 9 for an outside line, dial 1, the area code, the 7 digit telephone number and the authorization code.  For example, the dialing sequence for calling Washington, DC is
9 + 1 + 202 + ### + #### + authorization code.

International Long Distance Call:

Dial 9 for an outside line, dial 011, the country code, the city code, the telephone number and the authorization code.  For example, the dialing sequence for calling Tokyo, Japan is 9 + 011 + 81 + 3 + ##### + authorization code.

Conference Calls from Desk Phones:

NOTE:  A maximum of 4 callers (including yourself) may be on a conference call.  If you need to conference more than 4 callers, please submit an incident through ServiceNow.

Authorization Codes:

All telephones at JLab are restricted to local calls only.  To place a domestic and/or international call, callers must obtain an authorization code.  Division approval is required for all authorization codes.  Staff Members may get approval from supervisors.  Users need to fill out the Long Distance Authorization Form for approval.  Please visit the User Liaison Office in CEBAF Center, Room L111. When dialing a number that requires an authorization code, listen for the series of beeps before entering it in. You may experience a brief pause before the call connects.
